주로 성경이나 중세 시대 종교에 의한 탄압같은 내용을 비판하는 것 같아요.
앞부분인데 일반적인 소설 도입부처럼 작품의 배경, 등장인물 소개...뭐
그런 내용을 기술하는 게 아니고 소설인데 시보다도 더 상징적이고 압축된
표현들을 사용해서 마치 암호문을 해독하는 것 같아요.
두 도시는 아마도 영국과 프랑스를 말하는 것 같고...
귀족이나 왕실, 종교 지도자 등의 권력층 및 지배층과 피지배층의 상황들을
상징적으로 신랄하게 비꼬면서 비판하는...
영국과 프랑스를 자매라고 의인화해서 기술하는...
영국의 상징인 브리타니아라는 여성은 삼지창과 방패를 들고 있는 젊은 여성인데
영국 동전에도 나온다고 하네요.
이런 소설을 재미있다고 하는 이유가 궁금하네요.
재미는 커녕 졸라 난해하고 철학책보다 어려워서 졸렵고...
참고로 성경에서 예수를 믿는 신자들은 주로 하층민이라고 하네요.
하층민 어디서 들어본 것 같은데 말이죠.

방패와 삼지창을 든 그녀의 자매보다 축복을 덜 받은 프랑스는 화폐를 주조하여 쓰면서 지나치다 싶을 정도로 순조롭게 고비를 넘겼다. 게다가 프랑스는 기독교 목사들의 지침에 따라 45-55미터 거리에서 그의 시야 내로 지나간 지저분한 수도사 행렬에 경배를 표하기 위해 빗속에 무릎을 꿇지 않았다는 이유로 젊은이가 손이 잘리고 혀가 핀셋으로 찢기고 몸이 산채 불태워지는 형이 집행되는 것과 같은 인간적 업적을 누리고 있었다.
